RED CARPET

25th Costume Designers Guild Awards

I definitely took on quite the challenge when I decided to design and construct a #NakedWithoutUs themed dress for the 25th CDGA — I had a limited amount of time to make this dress happen and I settled on trying to make a “pixelated nude” dress, but wanted it to feel elegant, so I decided to rip the pattern to my favorite 1960s dress.

My gorgeous fabric came from the great B & J Fabrics when I was in NYC in February for one of my regular trips north. Beautiful silk grosgrain and buttons from Pacific Trimming.

I am an insane person and chose to quilt together 4 ply silk crepe, having never quilted before besides a nine square quilt by hand in 4th grade. Luckily, I started in this industry as a tailor, so I at least wasn’t completely at sea. Thank you to Quilting Adventures here in RVA for setting me up with great quilting supplies and advice.

I cut a lot of corners to finish this dress in time, but I still think it turned out pretty great considering it all. I didn’t even have time to pink the seam allowance or at least fray check it, but oh well! The hardest part was trying to flatline the lining on the curves. I wanted to do it by hand but no time! Sewing that by machine made me almost lose my mind. At least it’s done - no more quilting silk for me!
